wood-burning stove

Got a house fire where I'm trying to gauge the wood-burning fireplace (a Jotul F250) as potential ignition source (it was in use at the time).
Seems the space underneath was intended for wood storage.
Can't seem to find a user manual for these.
Owner says he had wood (wattle) packed underneath and on each side (see attached photo).
Any ideas as to prescribed do's & don'ts with these?
