Things may be different "down under" with all the regulations in place in your country, but personally I have found that one or two washes and rinses (depending upon the level of debris build-up) along with thorough wipe down is sufficient. I generally use a mild detergent degreaser like "DAWN" for the wash.
In addition to the information already provided by others, I would recommend you contact your territorial statutory regulatory agency about their policies and procedures for such matters.
