How about one of you guys dipping a shovel (spade in English) is gasoline (i.e. petrol), hosing it down with plain water, allowing it to air-dry overnight,
shoveling something innocuous (e.g. cat litter) with it into a sample container and sending it to a lab.
$150 well spent.
