Measuring surface temperature

Got a halogen downlighter running off a SPAZIO 7301 transformer which is (too) hot to touch (see attached photo); the transformer is a 230V- to 11.5V rated at 3.95A; (which by my calculations means the 50W/12V is probably pulling >5% over the rated output).

How best to measure the surface temperature?
A conventional thermometer is cylindrical, meaning poor surface contact;
wrapping it in say foil would minimize the heat loss, but perhaps escalate the temperature above norm.
For that matter; lying flat on a gypsum-board ceiling would also limit heat loss from it's substantial base surface, elevating transformer T's...
