I agree with John. I have worked fires in the past where this same scenario happened. Ask you lab how strong the sample for oil was. Weak or heavy. depending on how large the pile was you could have an endothermic reaction coming from the center of the pile that did not if the pile was large allow it to cycle or tumble freely in the drum. This may allow the center of the pile to remain intact or closed. In short yes this can happen. However you may want to check the dryers TCO to see if they function as designed and kept the dryer from overheating.
