In my youth (as a forensic chemist), we used vacuum cleaners (the sort with paper filters) successfully to retrieve trace evidence from carpets etc. of bombing suspects;
whole different ballgame though - you are recovering (not clearing) evidence,
and you have to go the whole hog (and then some, for the courts) to prevent/exclude potential contamination.
As for fire debris, would a leaf blower not be a viable alternative (more blowing power)? comes with it's own powerpack...
