Craig Beyler did some experiments on long-term exposure and changes in ignition properties. He found no significant change.
Your area of interest is related to self-heating. The hypothesis has been that changes in chemical properties also produce a more reactive char. Again, self-heating is a related rates problem. A more reactive material would produce a higher rate of thermal energy. Self-heating is really an energy balance.
