I think you have to wait until you’ve at least sized up the scene and made your way through it at least ONCE.
I’ve seen far too many investigators obtain photos, discuss the loss with public fire officials and gather incident reports BEFORE they even arrive on scene.
Bias is real. The more info you get BEFORE going to the scene the more MIND POLLUTION you have to deal with.
It is a balancing act, but like everything else we do, be prepared to explain your actions or lack of actions.
