Back in my Forensic-Lab days we were looking at ISO 17025 for lab-based processes (e.g. DNA, Drugs)
and 17020 for other more field-based forensic activities (e.g. Ballistics, Fire Investigation).

By in large the more generic the standard (e.g. ISO 9000/9001), the more it is just a paper exercise.
Even ISO 17025/17020 (which involve in situ audits by, amongst others, industry experts on top of the generic paper pushers)
largely just ensures that management protocols and checks & balances are in place to ensure quality laboratory outcomes;
still doesn't ensure Johnny is a competent FI (which is why individual certification is recommended on top of organizational accreditation).
