The chemical reaction of aluminum and water is believed to cause a portion of the explosive destruction of some molten aluminum - water explosions. The reaction 2Al + 3H2O --> Al2O3 + 3H2 is thought to be the primary reaction, although it may be possible that some AlO also forms. That chemical formula is from Advances in Chemical Engineering, Volume 12, James Wei, 1983.
The equilibrium conditions of a given set of reactants are not always obvious. Thermodynamics is not infinitely complicated, but it is not trivial.
