SUMMARY:
Manage a network of vendors who conduct in-depth fire investigations on all fires referred to the Fire Investigation Unit by the Claim or Subrogation Department. To work in a nationwide and regional team relationship with executive/regional Claim, Legal and Subrogation professionals on the determination of origin and cause fire investigations, subrogation, arson, and motive and opportunity investigations.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primarily responsible to manage vendors who investigate all fire claims referred by the claim department to the Fire Investigation Unit.
Participate in and approve the hiring of experts. Testify as to findings in court as appropriate. Assist legal counsel for litigation management, including development of legal strategies and preparing experts to testify.
Investigate and identify patterns of arson. Recognize and develop a plan of action to investigate original and cause fire claims as they relate to subrogation and arsons. Coordinate findings with other SIU units and claim departments throughout the country.

Collect, identify and safeguard all evidence necessary to the determination of an origin and cause fire claim.

Assist Regional Manager in the implementation of achievement of technical objectives in the operation of the unit.

Assist and consult with management with the identification and analysis of branch training needs. Participate in various industry and related business functions to maintain awareness/issues/trends in the claim or underwriting environment.

Provide primary technical support, as subject matter expert, to field offices on questions of fire losses.

Investigate, recognize and develop subrogation and salvage recovery potential.

Establish and maintain an active listing of qualified and responsible independent fire investigators for use as the need arises. Review and evaluate the quality of all vendor investigations on a case by case basis.

Assist the local claim office in major fires and catastrophic losses.

Establish a working relationship with local claim representatives to investigate fire claims. Train one on one in fire related claims, including taking a claim rep or supervisor to loss site. Conduct F.I. training sessions.

Ensure that the vendor network is meeting or exceeding Travelers quality customer service expectations.

Work with claim managers to assure that we are identifying and addressing the priority needs of the field organization.

Establish and maintain a liaison with Federal/State and local law enforcement organizations.

Establish a working relationship with the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Be knowledgeable of local fire statutes and applicable theories of fraud.

EDUCATION/COURSE OF STUDY:
Applicant should have a minimum of a Bachelor degree in related subject matter. Fire investigative expertise, experience and knowledge of investigative principals

WORK EXPERIENCE:
Applicant must have a minimum of 10 years of fire scene investigative experience or the equivalent fire scene investigative exposure.

Applicant must demonstrate working knowledge of NFPA 921 and NFPA 1033 guidelines/standards and knowledge of rules of evidence, procedural law and other protocols and regulations governing this discipline.

Applicant must have prior management experience or display management level competencies.

Demonstrated ability to provide Court Testimony and work with experts and counsel. Knowledge of insurance workflow, terminology, claim process and major product lines or departments (e.g., PL, CL, Litigation)

Up to date knowledge and experience with the latest advances in technology and job-related software applications to aid investigations.

Demonstrated willingness for continuing education to keep up to date knowledge of industry trends.

OTHER:
Strong analytical skills and problem solving skills using and interpreting information and facts which may require refining and improving existing methods of analysis; ability to use abstract reasoning.

Applicant must take initiative; significant planning and goal setting skills required.

Strong communication skills necessary to communicate their opinions and findings.

Coaching the science and methodology used by the vendor to determine the origin & cause of a fire in real-time.

Applicant will conduct a technical review and approval of the final hypothesis of the vendor investigator as to the origin & cause of the fire.

Applicant will conducts administrative review to approve final report/notes and invoicing from the vendor investigator.
