Major Duties and Responsibilities:


Technical work which involves the entire sequence of fire investigations from the origin and cause examination of the fire scene, through the required follow up, and the proper documentation of the incident. Work orders are received in general form with the employee required to develop exact work procedures and approaches within accepted legal and technical standards. Position is shift work which includes working weekends and holidays. Public contact of a sensitive nature is involved. Work is non – supervisory

Respond to fire incidents, burn related injuries, and other incidents as required.

Conduct comprehensive fire scene investigations; search through debris, take photographs, collect physical evidence, prepare drawings, and evaluate overall situation at fire scenes in order to determine a fire’s origin and cause.

Interview witnesses, suspects, and others’, both juvenile and adult, concerning information pertinent to cause determination.

Work in cooperation with other agencies and officials to ensure case information is properly controlled and preserved; work with multiple outside agencies as needed.

Work in tandem with Police Arson Detectives to conduct follow-up investigations, perform other related duties on cases determined to be arson in order to facilitate a successful prosecution of the offenders.

Attend court hearings and/or trials when necessary to present evidence and/or testimony.

Prepare and maintain case management files, to include standard and special reports; complete fire data reports, fire investigation reports; death or injury reports; evidence and laboratory reports; compile special reports upon request. Maintain computer databases to provide accurate recording and availability of case information.

Perform related work with Fire Education personnel

Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited two-year college curriculum with an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science Technology, Criminal Justice, or related field. Two or more years experience conducting fire origin and cause investigations.(Prefer related Bachelor degree and five years experience.) Possess certification as a North Carolina CFI(NC-CFI); (IAAI-CFI), and/or Fire Investigation Technician (FIT) through the International Association of Arson Investigators(IAAI), or equivalent.
