JOB OPPORTUNITY

Experienced Electrical Engineer

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has an opening in the Fire Research Laboratory (FRL) for an experienced electrical engineer. The laboratory is located in Beltsville, MD, in a professional business park in a suburb North of Washington, DC. The FRL is a world class testing facility dedicated to: “Advancing the science of fire investigation by supporting ATF Fire Investigations, providing training and disseminating information based on applied research.”

This position is open until filled, however the first date that applications will be evaluated is May 31st. The process of applying for a position with the federal government can be time consuming. Anyone interested in applying should begin soon.

A degree in electrical engineering is required. The position also requires U.S. Citizenship and successful completion of a background investigation for a top-secret security clearance. In addition, the incumbent must have:
1. Experience analyzing electrical circuitry and appliances to determine the cause of an electrical failure.
2. The physical ability to process major fire scenes and document, collect, preserve, and package evidentiary materials. Travel is required.
3. The ability to make authoritative verbal presentations to students and peer groups, and to give clear/convincing testimony in courts of law.
4. The skill to prepare well-written laboratory reports and technical documents that are suitable for publication in professional journals.
5. The ability to maintain positive relationships with others when working to achieve common objectives.

Placement within Pay Band 3 will be determined by the level of education, number of years of experience, the quality of the work experience, and previous salary history. The following annual salary examples include the Washington, DC area locality pay (20.89%):

BAND ANNUAL SALARY RANGE
Band 3 Zone 1 ~$82,961 to $107,854
Band 3 Zone 2* ~$107,856 to $130,633

* Individuals selected at the Band 3 Zone 1 level may be promoted to Zone 2 after demonstrating the ability to perform at the higher level.
