Course Description: This detailed program is oriented toward public and private fire investigators and experts in order to familiarize them with the operation of various electric lighting sources that maybe encountered at fire scenes. Incandescent lighting, fluorescent lighting, HID lighting, CFL lamps and LED lighting will be covered. Some examples of possible fire producing modes and failures of the various lighting sources will be discussed. The response of the materials used in the various lighting sources to fire and heat will also be reviewed.
Instructor David Powell, CFI of Sytek Consultants:
Since 1983 David Powell has been involved in the field of electrical and mechanical fire analysis and the evaluation of fire damaged materials and artifacts. He is a nationally recognized expert in the analysis of fire damaged light fixtures and the evaluation of shocks and electrocutions involving lighting equipment. He has testified as an expert in light fixtures, lamps and ballast failures in product liability, civil arson and criminal arson cases. He began his career in 1983 doing experimental temperature and heat flow measurements during ballast and capacitor failures. Since then he has participated in hundreds of light fixture, lamp, ballast, capacitor and thermal protector examinations around the United States and Canada.
