The actual quote in my previous post should read: “The mills of the gods grind slowly, but THEY grind exceeding small.” I would have promptly fixed the typo, but the edit function has been removed, and Chris will not tell us why. He has the edit capability but we do not. Again, I ask why this is.

Lorne, You paint an accurate picture, perhaps with a little too broad a brush, but accurate indeed. The problem of the hack/whore fire investigator indeed exists. But, I believe that we are changing for the better, however slowly. “The mills of the gods grind slowly, but the grind exceeding small.” The very existence of your posting is “de facto” proof of that. The problem of the hack/who

Lately I have been hearing a lot and thinking about the application of “Critical Thinking” to fire analysis, even reading references to it in fire reports. This may be the next popular catchphrase in the profession. Critical thinking can be defined as the examination and testing of propositions that are offered for acceptance, in order to find out whether they correspond to reality or not. I

No new certifications or fees are planed. However, we are launching a new recognition of expertise "Fellowship" category for qualifying IAFI members. More details about qualifications for joining IAFI, applications, and the qualifications for being awarded the IAFI Fellow designation should be forthcoming. After nearly two years of work and preparation the actual launching of I

No. Not to my knowledge. Why would anyone expect that they could or should be? I have never heard of a fire investigator being arrested for not properly knowing his business. Exactly what charge do you propose that he or the department be charged? Exactly how would you propose that the entire Phoenix Fire Department, one of the finest and most respected in the U.S., be arrested? If ev

The "Red Flags of Arson" have been universally rejected by the intelligent professional fire investigation community as anecdotal, unsustainable, wives tales. Use of the "Red Flags" are really only red flags of "hackism." Their use violates the scientific method and in many cases basic logic itself.

As always, you missed the point of the post entirely. What the hell does your post; "Toast," have to do with the discussion of long term ignition or Dr. Hearst's post about microbial action heating?

I could understand how collecting and packaging the pants could cause them to be tested negative, but how could improper collection and packaging cause the pants to test negative?

NFPA 921-2011 Section 6.3.2.5 reads in part: "Additionally, fire department ventilation operations can influence fire patterns. Some fire departments use positive pressure ventilation (PPV) fans that can create patterns that may be difficult to interpret, particularly if the investigator is unaware of PPV use. The history of suppression-generated patterns can only be understood through

The thing that Mr. Harvey’s readers need to decide is: “In the absence of what Mr. Harvey might characterize as THE answer, would they want just ANY answer or AN ACCURATE answer? This might give an outside observer a glimpse into the readers’ true motives in calling for the fire investigation in the first place.
