Heavy equipment starter fires

Have a case involving a starter in a Cat heavy loader where the positive and negative cables are crossed and touching my question is has anyone ever seen two large wires like this make contact without welding out or electrical arcing in excess with just resistance heating damage to the wires. It looks like some very small arcing but not the massive blow out or total separation of the wiring that you see some times. This machine had 4 wired in series batteries so plenty of elec energy to heat the wiring that grounded out.
