Phone charging cords

I recently bought an android phone charging cord only 30 days ago, give or take, and was using it to charge my wife's phone at about 7 PM on August 8th then we unplugged it and went to dinner. Afterward I came back home while my wife ran out at about 11:30 PM. I kept smelling a burning plastic smell in the living room where the phone cord was located that had not been used since 7 PM. I could not locate the source of the smell. Then the next day at about 6 PM we were in the living room and my wife went to plug in her phone to charge it and noticed that the micro USB and it was melted and burned. I think this is significant in that the burning was occurring hours after the phone had been taken off the charger and not being charged. The burning was to the USB that goes into the phone not the section that plugged into the wall. I have already reported to CPSC. Has anyone seen this happen with any other cords where the phone was not being charged???
The charger was made by Gadget Gear.
