NAFE was originally against ANY kind of standard, guide or recommended practice. They took the position that all that was needed was sound engineering judgment. They led the engineers out of ASTM Committee E30 on Forensic Sciences, and many of them held (some still hold) the preposterous position that forensic engineering is not a forensic science.

Lately, some more reasonable people have joined NAFE, and its ASTM counterpart E58, so maybe the times they are a changin'.
