Not much data on smoldering lint in the available scientific literature. Since a propagating smoldering wave front has a velocity, one would estimate how long it would take to reach the extent of the link. This would provide an order of magnitude estimate of the smoldering time that might be useful in such an analysis.

Another means would be to estimate the mass of the lint and a measured mass loss rate of the lint due to smoldering. This would also provide an order of magnitude estimate of the smoldering duration.

Much more difficult to determine if it will self-extinguish based on local conditions. The local conditions would control the energy balance and if self-sustaining smoldering would be possible.
