Overheating LCD

I am looking at a battery operated (4 V, 1.1 Ah) hand held device that appears to be the victim of an advancing fire. The only (remote) popssibility that I cannot absolutely eliminate is an overheated LCD. The connections to the PCB are not overheated, and I am unable to see how overheating might occur.

Just checking to see if any list members have ever seen an LCD overheat.
