More Information on the NFPA Website:

----------------------------------------------------------

Dear Committee Members:

The Technical Committee on Fire Tests is considering the withdrawal of NFPA 255, Standard Method of Test of Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, as part of its effort to reduce duplicative standards developed by NFPA, ASTM, and UL. If approved by the Standards Council, the withdrawal will be tentatively processed through the A2009 revision cycle.

The intent of this notice is to make the committee aware of the tentative proposed withdrawal of NFPA 255 so that revisions can be made to reference alternative standards, such as, ASTM E 84, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, and/or UL 723, Standard for Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. Note that NFPA 255 can continue to be referenced until such time as it is withdrawn; the committee might want to consider referencing the ASTM and UL standards in addition to NFPA 255 for now, as is now done in NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, and NFPA 5000, Building Construction and Safety Code.

This notice is being distributed to the committee to solicit their input on the proposed withdrawal of NFPA 255; comments can be directed to Greg Harrington at gharrington@nfpa.org, and he’ll forward them to the TC on Fire Tests and the Standards Council for their consideration.
