The NFPA 921 definitions at the end of the publication do not include the term "spontaneous combustion" but use the proper term "spontaneous ignition" - and with good reason.
Ignition may occur spontaneously, but what follows is combustion - which cannot occur spontaneously. Look up the definitions of both "combustion" and "ignition" and you will follow the logical progression to what I have just pointed out.
Yes, 921 uses the term "spontaneous combustion" in the body of the text (erroneously as you will no doubt conclude), but that does not make the term correct. Many of you have no doubt also noticed other unfortunate inconsistensies in NFPA 921. Perhaps some day the publication will become as professional and error-free as it should be.
