Question for our electronic experts

Ok heard a wild one on while monitoring the sattelite feed at the station
This electronic expert claims that electronics manufactured in the 70's used a lot of tin in them and that this tin over times grows wiskers like fibers as it ages and corrodes and that the space shuttle could suffer a catastrophic failure in space due to vibrations knocking these wiskers looseand shorting out the electronics.
Any one ever observe this or hear of it before sounds like another urban legend to me.
