Thank you for correcting me on that. Indeed, I have confirmed that my chemical dictionary does define hydrocarbons as compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon.
Interestingly, then I expect that many of the compounds in crude oil are actually not "hydrocarbons" (containing as they do occasional atoms of oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen and metals that are often removed during the hydrotreating process).
And most of the octane additives for gasoline are not "hydrocarbons" either; namely ethanol, MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), ETBE (ethyl tertiary butyl ether), TAME (tertiary amyl methyl ether) and MMT (methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl).
