For the benefit of the other forum participants, I beleive that one of the earliest publications of a listing of these "Old Wives' Tales" was at National Conference on Fire Investigation Instruction, New Orleans, Louisiana, January, 1990, co sponsored by NAFI and the NFPA FIre Science and Technology Educators Section.
I am sure that even earlier examples of discrediting these myths could be found with a litle further reserach.
