Exploding Batteries

I am looking for assistance in researching the possibility of a fire being caused by an off market Heavy Duty “D” cell battery. In this particular incident, I found the outer casing to the battery, approximately 20 ft from its original location with the positive end and contents of the battery missing.

The battery had been inside a single D cell battery powered, plastic LED lantern with direct exposure to sun light, suspended on the wooden railing above and adjacent to a plastic lounge chair with cushion. The lounge chair and cushion were consumed by the fire.
