I could not get ignition in aluminium pots of any size (oil temperature maxed out @ 340C/645F),
but eventually got ignition in a small stainless-steel pot (@ 357C/675F) using 4/5" sunflower oil.
Reckon the extra weight perhaps helped with better surface contact with the hob's spiral?
As an aside, after performing some half a dozen such open-air tests with no ignition,
this last test I set up just outside my office door (so that I could get some work done);
needless to say the ignition caught me unawares, and the small foam fire extinguisher I had on hand didn't cut it,
so I ended up sacrificing four bathroom towels (wetted in the dog's water bowl) to the cause...
SWAMBO was not impressed - Mother's Day saw me buying new towels and a replacement stainless-steel pot...
