Many forensic fire debris analysis labs in the US, including Analytical Forensic Associates and Forensic and Scientific Testing, regularly look for vegetable oils and cal tell the relative amounts of unsaturated fatty acids.

Doug correctly points out that there are many variables involved. Most vegetable oils are capable of self-heating under the right conditions.

My file on spontaneous heating, including the PowerPoint of "Watching Paint Dry," can be found at this link.
