The testing referenced in John's presentation is used for the classification of a material for transport. There are three-classifications that are the result of conducting a limited number of tests with specific characteristic lengths (i.e., "pile sizes") and ambient temperatures.
The classification tests are not able to determine if a material can self-heat to thermal runaway under a range of characteristic lengths and ambient temperatures. The characteristic length is coupled to an ambient temperature. Thus, the testing can produce an ignition model that "maps" the characteristic length and the ambient temperature required to produce thermal runaway. A much more intensive testing process than the UN tests.
