Damage to glass bulbs in sprinkler heads

Over the years I have heard several reasons for the failure of the glass bulb in sprinkler heads. One was the freezing of the water in the pipe where the sprinkler head is attached. The other is that the sprinkler bulb was scratched during cleaning with a broom or some other object. Are these myths or is there printed research and testing that confirms these problems.
