Sometimes, steel can oxidize so that it looks like it melted. When we investigated the Oakland fire in 1991, we found what looked like melted bedsprings in many of the houses. Because iron oxide has a larger surface area than the underlying steel, it can create bulbous ends on the steel wires. This happens at ordinary fire temperatures.
