This is what NFPA 1033 expects fire investigators to know. From Annex D:
( 3) Electricity and electrical systems-.
(a) The design, function, and components of residential
electrical systems
(b) How to determine whether the electrical system was
energized at the time of the fire
(c) How to determine whether the electrical system
played a part in the initiation or spread of a fire,
which includes the ability to distinguish electrical
damage from environmental damage
(d) The ability to decide when it is necessary to call in
someone with more advanced electrical knowledge
(e) How to conduct and interpret an arc survey
(f) How to describe and identify how electrical energy
can cause heating, which can be the ignition source
of the fire (e.g., high-resistance heating, arcing
through char, and overloading)
