Re: Alterations to Digital Photography in Fire Investigation

Lightening, Darkening, Enlarging and Rotating are actions which are considered to be enhancements and not alterations, as long as they are performed to the COPIES of the original photographs. These actions are considered acceptable and do not alter the image.
A COMPLETE SET OF ALL UNEDITTED/FORMATTED/ENHANCED PHOTOGRAPHS SHOULD ALWAYS BE KEPT SEPARATE FROM THE COPIES FOR LATER VERIFICATION IF NEEDED. I have on very rare occassions, needed to and have cropped pictures to enlarge portions which emphasize key points, but I ALWAYS perform such actions to the COPIES of the original photographs. It has never been an issue and if an attorney wants to try and go down that road in the future, I can provide the original photographs immediately.
I personally have heard rumors about investigators altering photographs, but these are always heresay and when you ask specifics, the party can not provide any names, dates, case history, or any other details relating to these, what I call, urban myths.
Hope this helps Doug.
