State Supreme Court rejects Maloney appeal again

MADISON, Wis. -- A former Green Bay police detective convicted of strangling his estranged wife in 1998 and setting her house on fire has lost another appeal to the state Supreme Court.

John Maloney, 50, a former arson investigator, was convicted by a jury on charges of first-degree intentional homicide, arson and mutilation of a corpse, but he has insisted he did not kill his wife.

He has lost each of his appeals, including two that were reviewed by the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year, consultant-advocate Ira Robins asked the high court to order an inquiry into statements made at Maloney's trial by an arson investigator that Robins claimed were false.

The case was listed Friday among those the Wisconsin Supreme Court won't review.

Maloney is serving a sentence of life in prison with no eligibility for parole until 2024.
