There were many problems with this type of heating where a nail or screw inadvertently struck the grid, and thru pyrolisis a fire eventualy broke out.
when wood beam over heated.
The new style system has GFCI protection or is now low voltage and is installed as panels which has been found to be much more safer and efficient.
The systems were suppose to be designed that even if the thermostat stayed stuck on the grid itself would not overheat and cause damage much like a heating pad.
Alot of the panel heating your seeing to day is done thru heating the floor.
