The simplest remedy (not necessarily the best) is to use a hand held flash light to allow the camera to focus. If you keep the camera button half pressed to allow the focus to "hold", you can then turn off your flashlight. This allows the flash sensor to determine the strength of the flash needed.

Once the camera is focused, as long as the button remains pushed, it will hold the focus.

Again, it may not be the best way, but it is how I handle this same situation.
