Ken,

To a certain extent there is a standardization for both the NAFI and IAAI certification tests. Both testing regimens are based upon the prerequisites of NFPA 1033 the Standard for Fire Investigator Professional Qualifications. 1033 only lists one fire investigation text in its Appendix C Informational References, NFPA 921, as well as the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook. NFPA 472, Standard for Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents, 2002 edition is also curently a referenced document in 1033.

The NAFI test is based solely on NFPA 921. The IAAI test is based upon NFPA 921, the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, and several popular private fire investigation texts.
