The existence of pyrophoric carbon per se has been debunked to the extent that long-term heating does not create a product which autoignites at ambient temperatures. However, charred cellulosics may be much more sensitive to ignition than the original material. An example of this phenomenon is given by the use of charred cloth for fire starting back in the flint-and-steel era.
