Nick,

Breakdown voltage in air at STP is about 380 volts.
Direct plug-in transformer is a step down transformer, usually 10:1 or less
1500 volt surge would equal 150 volts at tip if core could transfere that without reaching saturation.
Dielectric withstand testing on this type of product for UL, etc. is 1500 VAC primary to secondary.
My answer is that I do not believe this is a credible scenerio.
