Gas lines are designed to be low resistance (friction) and low pressure drop. This is accomplished by making the diameter of the gas piping internally much bigger than the size of the orifice on the load appliance. The pressurized gas downstream of the break will lose pressure immediately. Almost all of the pressurized gas will expand and will dissipate through the leak, and very little through the orifice.
