If one works in fire prevention the answer to Mr. Moseley's question is YES. If you look at a typical kitchen extinguishing system that incorporates a gas shut off as part of the system when activated, residual gas in the system does burn off until the gas supply is exhausted in the line. Now with that said there are multiple factors of how much gas you will burn off from the severed line to the appliance. That calculation is for someone to answer that has more initials after their name than I do.
