It would seem that you are asking for one's personal definition (i.e. thier understanding of the definition) of the terms or the common understanding of these definition (right or wrong) within the fire investigation/fire service communities of these terms, independent of the actual definitions. Is this a reasonable observation?
If so, the Specific Gravity is a well defined concept. The Vapor Density may be commonly used within a technical community, but it is defined as a subset (i.e. for gases) of the more broad definition of Specific Gravity (i.e. solids, liquids, and gases). Your posting seems to beg the question (at least to me), what is the purpose and intended use of this survey?
