As I was writing a response to your definition question, Pat beat me to it. However, to add to Pat's response, I found the following definitions:
Vitiation - Refers to the reduction of oxygen concentration in air. Quintiere, J. Principles of Fire Behavior
"Smoke from under the neutral plane is frequently recirculated back toward the fire, along with smoke that may be accumulating in adjacent compartments in the hallway. This process, called vitiation, reduces the oxygen available for combustion, causing a reduced heat release rate." NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 19th edition. Excerpt from the Dynamics of Compartment Fire Growth Chapter.
