The TIF detector may be a solid state type which elies on the adsorption of target organic materials on a surface. If so, the meter may be reacting to hot water condensate.
There was a case years ago in which the local FD relied on their new solid state detector in bringing arson charges. The judge allowed the jury to take the meter back into the jury room. They waved it over a cup of coffee and acquitted the defendant.
