NEC 70 has very specific codes as to how a wire has to be run on studding to prevent wiring from getting hit by a nail.In some cases steel anti nail plates must be used to prevent a nail from hitting a wire this is specifically to deal with the errant nail driven by a homeowner or contractor.
Each state has various codes and statutes as to how work is performed many now use the ICC codes which pertains to proper workman ship by all trades.
as due manufactuers with how there products to be installed and maintained.
You can start with your states dept of labor and industry dept or local code people who can give you specific answers. Here in Pa. we use ICC which often refrences NFPA codes as well.
