To complement an earlier posting on the subject of education, if the majority of the fire investigation community had previously aquired a fundamental understanding of the chemistry and thermodynamics of the burning of hydrocarbons, the community may have never originally produced and continually endorsed the "old wives tale" that gasoline burns hotter than other hydrocarbon fuels. This is but one example of why education and the application of fundamental knowledge to the investigation of fires is important.
