Smoke alarms and roof space fires

Anyone aware of any research or had any experience with the behaviour of smoke alarms fitted to the underside of the ceiling when there is a fire in the roof space above?

Specifically, do they melt and fall off or are they otherwise adversely affected by heat that they may fail to function?
