The ambient conditions in an attic space are contrary to the use of smoke detectors/alarms in these spaces. The temperature extremes, humidity (not to mention the dust, dirt and other stuff) will cause the devices to fail. Installing smoke detectors/alarms in a non-conditioned attic space is in violation of the provisions of the National Fire Alarm Code and the manufacturer's listing criteria.
The type of plastics used in the smoke detector/alarm housing will generally begin to fail around 300 degrees F.
Attic spaces are properly protected with heat detectors.
