The smoke alarms were fitted to the underside of a timber ceiling (i.e. living space) of the house. If the fire started in the space above the ceiling (between the ceiling and the roof), would the alarms melt off the ceiling or otherwise distort so that they would not be effective when the fire spread into the main living areas (where the occupants were sleeping).
