where I work we primarily use Nikon Digital cameras (D70, D100, D1X, and D2X). We have had great luck with them. Our procedure is to upload pictures into a secure server ASAP. We have no requirements for saving the files in a specific format, so each person saves them the way that they think is best.
What I have noticed is that in the beginning the camera buffs saved everything as RAW and everyone else saved pictures as the highest resolution JPEG. As time has gone by the camera buffs stopped taking photos as raw and transitioned to saving photos as the highest resolution JPEG s just like everyone else.
I think that there are two reasons for this. First, (unlike film cameras) the photographer rarely has to make exposure compensation and white balance corrections with photos from digital cameras. Second, (and more importantly) the investigators got tired of having to convert their raw photos before pasting them into their report.
